Week of Thrifts Kick-Off

I went by the Junior League warehouse this weekend and scooped up quite a few nice vintage and thrift finds. Enough, in fact, that I thought I'd do a week of thrifts - outfits with thrifted items, that is. They won't be 100% thrifteditem-outfits - that's not really my style. I like to mix and match secondhand items with the latest styles. I buy and wear what I like, regardless of how much (or how little) I paid for it (but I think many of you out there will know exactly what I'm talking about). I've been having lots of fun playing with the outfits and what I really want to start doing is more outfits that are a bit more fun - trendy, deconstructed, rock chic - whatever - I just want to play with my clothes a little more. :) Anywho, starting this week, don't be surprised to see more funky outfits making the mix.

Here's an off-white ruffly, silk top with pearl buttons I picked up:

Ladylike with the pencil skirt by with a trendy twist of ankle booties - I think this outfit would look a lot better with black opaque or semi-opaque tights, but my friend taking the pictures said you guys wouldn't be able to see the ankle booties.

I think this top also looks super sleek with just jeans and maybe simple pumps.

Rufflly Silk Top: Thrifted DANCASTER
Pencil Skirt: Banana Republic
Seafoam-Green Snakeskin Clutch: Thrifted Express
Ankle Booties: Anne Klein NY
Jeans: Banana Republic

John P Reports from the Bad Boys Event in San Francisco

BPR Field Reporter Extraordinaire, John Patsais brings us this wonderful report from the "Bad Boys of the Runway" event in San Francisco. Thanks again, John P, and thanks also to Marc Huestis for inviting us along!

In the City by the Bay, known all over the world for its open-mindedness to everything from politics to fashion, the fashionistas, pop culture enthusiasts, poseurs, and curiosity-seekers of San Francisco were treated to a display of glamorous and cutting edge fashions this past Friday evening. The famous Castro Theater served as a haven for fashion fans who were treated to dazzling displays of sartorial genius and unbridled ingenuity via classic film clips as well as contemporary designers and local drag artistes. In this anything goes city, a fashion designer with an outside the box mentality, vision, passion, and cutting edge aesthetic could very well find success. Project Runway alums Santino Rice and Jeffrey Sebelia may have very well found a second home outside of Los Angeles, judging by the reception they received from San Francisco locals during the Bad Boys of the Runway event. Host Marc Huestis led the panel discussion, and we were quickly reminded why Rice and especially Sebelia have duly earned their reputations.

misshaped boys

Sean, 22 - the Misshapes at Don Hills
Sean studies fashion design and therefore had a proper opinion on what fashion should be - "a fantasy you project about yourself". he mentions Walt Disney as a creator who takes his daydreams and turns them into a reality. fashion should be honest and not superficial. you should take fashion as a tool to create your own caracter, the person you wish to be on the outside as a reflection of who you are on the inside.
Sean's style icons are Bjork and Gwen Stefani. he wears all vintage.

Hunter, 20 - the Misshapes
"a well-tied tie is the first serious step in life." Hunter quotes Oscar Wilde. the filmmaker likes his style to be "outrageous and elegant" and with a sense of humor. he achieves it here with his Dior jacket, a shirt and pants by Trip and Goerge Cox shoes. his ring is by Surface to Air.

The Shopaholic Series

One of my favorite books are the 'Shopaholic' series; they are written by Sophie Kinsella and are a collection of books about a character called Becky Bloomwood. The titles are Confessions of a Shopaholic, Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, Shopaholic Ties Knot, Shopaholic and Sister, Shopaholic and Baby. They are all riveting books and have developed something of a cult following. Becky is a financial journalist who shares a lovely flat in a lovely part of London and has a pretty charmed life. A few years out of University, she is on the career path and living a life full of fun and challenges just like many other twentysomethings. The problem is that Becky has money issues due to the fact that she cannot stop spending and has amassed thousands of pounds in debt. So what does she do? She burys her head in the sand, hides her credit card and bank statements and carries on spending. I read this book on a very long flight from Sydney to Tokyo in 2000 and take it from me, time flew by very quickly and I was really sad when I finished the book. Confessions of a Shopaholic is a warm, funny, witty and pacy book and most important of all, Becky is very endearing. There are times when you want to strangle her because of the silly things she does but her loyalty to her family and friends win you over. This book proved so popular that it spanned a sequel; Shopaholic Takes Manhattan and after that, three more titles and each one has been as good as the first. We see Becky go from being a single gal about town to a bride to be, wife and a mother and no she does not learn the errors of her ways and still continues to splurge and get herself in scrapes. However, let me tell you, the lady has spirit and she is one of my favourite fictional characters of all time.

Happy Birthday to Our Dear Tim Gunn

Tim, we love you more than words could express. Thank you so much for the love, the friendship and the support that you have given to us at BPR. We can't wait to see you on Project Runway Season 4 and we look forward to the debut of Tim Gunn's Guide to Style. Happy Birthday, Dear Tim.

And, just for fun, Photoshop wizard Phaolo gives us his birthday greeting to Tim Gunn.

Latex leggings and waxed jeans

With the whole patent look successfully making it's way down the runways to main stream public, it's no surprise that waxed jeans and latex leggings are on the rise.

It's apart of the whole tough girl look that's been evident on the runway's for the fall season which include black, leather and patent styles. High gloss adds an 80's touch, however shine may attract attention to those bits and pieces of the body that may be in less than perfect shape. For those who don't like the out-there look try waxed jeans.
I'm trying to find myself a pair to see if it works well in reality or at least on my body, but it's been harder to find than i thought. When i find an (affordable) pair I'll do a post on it.
