Tenerife (Canary Islands- Spain) is the second biggest carnival on earth, only after Brazil. Formerly, carnival was time to break shameless the legal canons, was the permission to ridicule and laugh at different situations, they also make jokes on that-time-celebs, everything through special fancy dresses or songs. It was also time to make excesses: eating so much - as a prelude for saying bye-bye to the meat in 40 days, as the Lent tells. A lot of people took advantage to being promiscuous too, as the ambiguity of the fancy dresses was the best chance to do so.
It's believed carnival has its origins in the Roman Empire. In fact, the word carnival stem from "carrus navalis", the boat -on wheels- which carried Baco's priest( Baco was the God of wine) in his famous bacchanals. A celebration which was thought to say goodbye to the winter. Its expansion over Europe was possible thanks to the spreading of the Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages, the celebration became Christian.
Today it does not really loose those connotations. Carnival in Tenerife is a kind of popular rebellion, driven by the original and cool fancy dresses, the songs, the general happiness -a consequence of the general drunkenness - the 24h.party. This year Tenerife carnival its dedicated to the magic world, and so most of the big dresses are inspired by that.
The Queen of the Carnival is this girl, Nauzet Celeste, with the fantasy "Golden Age"
Normally, the girls supported dresses which are around 40 kg! It's incredible!
Sophia Loren was invited as the godmother of the Carnival, and Depardieu seems very concentrate in her neckline!
