Weighing in on the Wayfarer

The re-launch of the infamous Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses caused quite the frenzy in Tinseltown- with everyone who was anyone, donning a pair. The style which was first popularized by the incomparably elegant Audrey Hepburn in the 50's and then again in the 80's, which saw Ray-Ban's profit margins sky-rocket thanks to Tom Cruise's Risky Business.

Fast forward more than 20 odd years and Ray-ban Wayfarers have still got it going on and this time around Hollywood starlets including Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie and Mischa Barton had a lot to do with bringing the trend to a much wider, perhaps younger demographic. We mustn't forget the London Ladies Ala Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Juliette Lewis and Kiera Knightley who were the subtle pioneers of the revival.

It's no mystery why the wayfarer keeps coming back on track wit mini-moguls Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen making it look more than covetable with their cross between artsy Parisian and funky L.A style. On a daily basis the twins kept to the Original Large Ray-Ban Wayfarer ORIG.RB 2140 frame of Tortoise Shell and Black.

The popularity saw Ray-Ban introduce the classic cut in unique hues ranging from dark blue, pink, red, blue marine, military green, brown and orange. Paris Hilton tried to rock the daring white and red, but that best be left to the Chloe Sevigny & Ashley Olsen's of the world-minus the trucker cap.

Ashlee Simpson is one celebrity who whole heartily embraced, loved and made love to her Ray-Bans. Here she is in yet another pair of Ray-Bans. Ashlee wears Ray-Ban Wayfarer II RB 2143, with red bridge and black frame which is the updated two-toned frame.

The Oakley brand quickly stepped up its game when it saw Wayfarers rear their iconic eyes, by re-launched their 1st generation Oakley Frogskin Wayfarers. The vintage Wayfarers have seen the likes of hottie Elisha Cuthbert and Hayden Paniettiere standout summer long in their mirrored lenses. The style which was first introduced for men has seen women swoon and Ebayers in a frenzy to get their final bids in on these limited edition sunglasses.

With anything good, imitations are bound to follow, thus Ksubi introduced the Tsubi Milka Wayfarer to their collection. This has been a popular pair in Australian editorials for alternative fashion magazines and made a fan of Lindsay Lohan. But this fantastic pair have not received the recognition they deserve and failed to prove as popular as the hardcore Tsubi Grille design.

Chloe's small but wonderful sunglasses collection brought out a few wayfarer styles. Including Chloe CL 2144 which has been seen on Mandy Moore of late and is top Australian model Catherine McNeil's favourite pair of sunglasses.
Kate Bosworth and Rihanna have also tapped into the wayfarer look by sporting the Chloe Eyewear. Rihanna wears the unique Chloe CL 2124 wayfarer with slit style arms.

Even Chanel have moved away from their timeless styles to introduce a vintage collection which include fantastically quirky sunglasses including bright eyed green wayfarers as seen on Rachel Bilson last week.

If you love the newly introduced vintage wayfarer by Chanel as seen on Beyonce, but isn't in your eyewear-budget price range, the Ray-Ban Wayfarer II RB 2143 offers a pair in black with gold top bar and arms which were introduced first and look practically the same at only $150.

Lanvin has come into the mix with the Lanvin Key West sunglasses. After being seen on Ashley Olsen, these sunglasses sold out in an instant online at ShopBop and according to sunglasses guru Flashy Shades, the style has already sold out in Barneys.

Blogger FlashyShades has done a fantastic post on the Top Sunglasses of 2008 (which is worth checking out) and Lanvin Key West tops it of course. I heart these sunglasses, but unfortunately living in Australia, Ebay is my only option to access this particular pair, but unfortunately the pair have been significantly marked up by the very few eBay Sellers who stock them.

According to WhoWhatWearDaily, brightly colored frames are the way to go this summer, and thanks to the likes of Luella, Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel and Ray Ban the wayfarer is the pair to do it in. Always on trend Sienna Miller, has been seen in a beautiful turquoise wayfarer by the brand Super. This colour is perfect to set off a summer tan.

Uffie and Klaxon's guitarist Simon Taylor are also huge fans of the Italian made Super brand.

A very underrated brand in western countries is Persol. They make some very nice Italian sunglasses with high quality materials which have a legion of European followers including the Milan and Paris Fashion set.

Lauren Conrad also donned a pair on her reality tv show. She wore their large wayfarer model, Persol 2849 which comes in two sizes. Christina Ricci has been seen in the smaller pair.

Hollywood have followed suit with Mary-Kate Olsen, Orlando Bloom, Ashley Olsen, Matt Damon, Sharon Stone, Hugh Laurie and Elle McPherson becoming fans.

Ray-Ban's Clubmaster RB 3016 sunglasses, which are a metal take on the classic wayfarer have been so popular that they were used to style all the models at this season's Ellery Fashion Show in Australia. From the Jonas Brothers to the stylish Jasmine Sewell, these gold detailed wayfarers are set to be the next biggest Ray-Ban seller.

Many are still in love with they Wayfarer style sunglasses and are not willing to let them go anytime soon, thus the new styles, sizes and shapes that have been interpreted by many designers has brought a breathe of fresh air to the style which many can delve straight into.

All in all, imitations, knock-off and inspired styles may come and go, but at the end of the day, as all things go, nothing beats the original cut. That's why the Paris and Milan Fashion set, including top models Jessica Stam and Natasha Poly alongside Fashion Director Emmanuelle Alt have stuck to the tried and trusted classic black Ray Ban Wayfarer Orig.RB 2140 sunglasses and a stylish move at that.

Wayfarers take on Fashion Week

Although some of you may have ditched your wayfarers at summers end, wayfarers still hold a special position on the faces of the fashionable set at the seasons fashion shows. Wayfarers made an appearances in the form of versatile black, to bright whites to fire engine reds, adding an 80's touch to any outfit.

Vanessa Hudgens deja vu

The more and more i see Vanessa Hudgens the more and more I'm reminded of Lindsay Lohan, especially in this photo. She's really starting to carve out her style niche, but the ballet flats, Balenciaga bag, flowy outfit, wayfarers, her misleading smile and the famous iced coffee, all seem to remind me of one of our favourite it girls back in the day...

Red Ray Ban Wayfarers

OK we all know wayfarer's are big, but these days our young Hollywood starlets can't get enough of their ray ban wayfarer's that their now sporting these 80's shades in fiery red. First seen on Lindsay Lohan red wayfarer's are a modern take on the classic style.

It takes a lot of confidence to pull off such a bright color adorning your face, but Mary Kate Olsen and Rachel Bilson work the look by keeping the rest of their outfit black, while Sienna Miller prefers to color coordinate which also works.

However, I don't think red wayfarers will stand the test of time, so it may be better to invest in a cheaper chain store inspired style for around $10 rather than folk out $100 on a very trendy seasonal piece.

Ashley Olsen: minimilist style

Ashley Olsen is once again proving to me that minimalism is best! I love these two pics of her because i think she looks absolutely fresh, put-together and classy in a very effortless sort of way. Baby blue button down shirt, tailored skinny leg jeans, wayfarers and huge balenciaga heels. To me she looks superb!

Me & Wayfarer's

Today after exams i sought some retail therapy and bought myself a new leather bag, which was harder than i thought considering everything in the shops these days are a knock-off either the Miu Miu Coffer, the metallic Marc Jacobs Stam bag or a Chloe Paddington! I work at a handbag & accessories store, but they too make copies of trendy high-end bags and accessories, so i had to search hard and long.

Well, when i popped in to my store what else but a whole collections of multi-colored ray-bans were staring me in the face!! This was the perfect opportunity to test the style out. So instead of being a closed minded bitch for once, i tried a pair of black ones on (too scared to try the bright colors). I might have given wayfarer's a bad wrap from time to time, but i can understand now why people like them. They're a contrast to the over sized bug eye styles, and are kinda edgy.

My dad has a pair of ray-Ban wayfarer's from way back, but he has a sentimental attachment to them, because they were the first pair of sunglasses he ever owned and they must bring back a lot of memories, so it didn't feel appropriate to ask.
I bought myself a pair to test out and to see if i feel comfortable in them. They were only $10 so even if i decide i really hate them, then theirs no big loss and at least i tried them out right?
Well you be the judge keep them or dump them?

Just a few more pics of Kate Moss....um because i love her and her effortless sense of style!!

Pic 2- Kate Moss looking aboslutely beautiful at heading to the airport with a oversized Gucci carry on bag, wyfarer sunglass' from her top-shop range, cute silver flats and hair neatly pulled together bun.

Pic 3- Normal day, getting upto mischief with boyfriend Pete Doherty in a completely black ensemble.

Pic 4- Out for dinner with friends, in a long satin skirt and the same belt as the previous pic.

Kate Moss Dior Extralight sunglasses

With everyone crazy over the trendy Ray ban wayfarers, i thought i would just post a pair of unique sunglasses i really like that Kate moss has been seen wearing recently. They are called Dior Extralight 1, and can be purchased online at the authentic designer sunglasses dealer Otticanet or at your local Dior stockist.

These sunglasses have an oversized look, but a medium fit to which gives off a sharp, polished finish. These sunglasses feature a soft rectangular style frame and a cute heart replaces the "O" in the word Dior. These sunglasses come in White, Black and Dark Violet, but the black ones are currently out-of-stock on Otticanet. Thanks to Ray Ban Wayfarers, smaller, sharper style sunglasses like these Diors are coming back, leaving chunky oversized sunglasses on the back burner.

Wayfarer's still going strong

It seems more and more everyday, that Wayfarer style sunglasses are getting more and more popular! Celebs decked themselves out in these retro shades, in all sorts of colours from black, brown, white and red! Designers such as Chanel and Luella are also capitalizing on the popularity of this trend, while many chain stores are bringing their version of the style in from Target to Kate Moss' line at Topshop. But i must admit, nobody makes these sunglasses look more sophisticated and classier than Audrey Hepburn!

Kirsten Dunst- The more I see the more I hate!

OK this girl is really beginning to get on my nerves, what's with Kirsten Dunst always trying to pull of the "I'm such a hard rocker look?!?" OK i love the rock look, just not on her and with her snotty attitude. And she is desperately seeking recognition that she was the one that bought the Ray-Bans back in...note: Girlfriend you ain't that hot and close your mouth when you yawn!!!

On a more positive note!

This is one girl i love! Ashley Olsen has always been a favourite celeb of mine and never seems to do any wrong...i love how she:

  • Wears a piece of clothing more than once Ala the leather jacket

  • In my eyes, she rocks the Ray-Ban wayfarer's the best compared to the other female celebs.

  • Wears the same Jil Sander flats to do errands

  • And Totes around her signature classic Fendi bag.

My purchase

Last week I was browsing Ebay, not really wanting anything...until i came across a pair of 80's Wayfarers. I never wanted a pair of wayfarers purely because they remind me of the bad fashion sense my parents had back in the day. But when i came across these Gold and Dark purple Vintage wayfarers i had to have them! I don't know when I'm going to wear them, but they are pretty cool to look at and most people with that funky street style happening will pull them off perfectly. With the whole 80's vibe coming back i felt a need to have these.

Ban my Rays

Ok, i know these Ray-bans Wayfarers were going to come back sooner or later...but i never thought they would come back which such force!

Celebs are embracing this look without a second thought from style icon Chloe Sevigny to the milliondollar babies the Olsen Twins. When you see a look on these girls you know its going to be big!! From skinny jeans to headbands to chunky shoes, these girls are bringing Ray-bans back.

I personally love the look of these glasses for a funked up street look or an artsy evening look. However, unlike big sunglasses which come in all shapes, styles, colours and brands for individuality...this style is from one particular brand thus don't be suprised to walk past 10 other people wearing the exact same shades.

The focus should be more on the "cat-eye" look rather than the wayfarers themselves. Try the Marc Jacobs MJ046S for a more individual take as seen on trend-setter Lindsay Lohan.
These shades suit every personality from the rocker types to coutourist to the conservative to the street styler and at a litter over $100 everybody should have their hands on a pair of these bargain buys.
Were to buy? Most designer sunglass retailers such as Sunglass Hut sell Ray-bans, however online stores such as Otticanet , Ebay and EyeSave Discount Sunglasses provide sunglasses at your convienience.

check out the pics of celebs bocking out the sun while looking mighty fine in their 80's inspired shades.
