Country Strong

I read a really interesting post yesterday on Bangs and a Bun about the downfall of Britney Spears and how she is a product of the flawed star system. At the dizzy heights of her career Ms Spears was the biggest pop artist in the world, however seven albums, numerous No 1 singles, hundreds of magazine covers. two divorces. two kids and one nervous breakdown later and she is struggling to get back to her best. The fact is that the music scene has moved on without her and the stage is now occupied by likes of Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Rihanna. Like it or not the star system is brutal - you are either hot or you are not. It is a system that was created by Hollywood at the beginning of the 1900s as a way of promoting and exploiting movie stars. The emphasis was placed on image rather than acting abilities and studio bosses, PRs and agents worked together to create a persona. Although it officially declined in the 1960s the strategy is still used worldwide in the entertainment industry today and to much success.

Nowhere is the star system more relevant than in Country Strong in which Gwyneth Paltrow plays country music superstar, Kelly Canter who has had problems with alcohol addiction and has been rocked by scandal. After a stint in rehab she is back on the road headlining a major US tour, however it becomes apparent that Kelly's demons have not completely disappeared and she suffers meltdown after meltdown. To add to her woes there is a pretender to her throne in the form of Chiles Stanton played by Leighton Meester who is a new talent that has burst onto the scene. Chiles is young, beautiful, fresh and unlike Kelly can hold her nerves on stage. Kelly's self destructiveness is not just confined to the stage it also runs through her personal life which is complicated with her relationships with her lover, Beau played by Garrant Hedlund and her husband James played by Tim McCraw. Country Strong sort of loses its way throughout the film but what it does do is demonstrate how brutal fame can be to a young woman. The parallels between Gwyneth and Leigton's characters are interesting; one washed out and the other up and coming, one a feisty brunette and the other a fragile blonde. I thought it was also a nice touch that both actresses can sing a bit too. Overall Country Strong is not a bad film but I would put it down as more of a TV film, I just did not feel that it had enough of the wow factor to be on the big screen. You know how some films could do with editing? Well Country Strong actually needed an extra half hour to be added to the beginning so we could get to know the characters especially the lead role. The hasty beginning does not give us a real sense of Kelly and her convictions - what exactly caused her to have a breakdown anyway and why is her relationship with her husband dead? Country Strong misses a trick by not allowing us to invest emotionally in the characters, so all the dramatic events that unfold are to no avail because despite the dramatic ending I really did not feel the impact.

Country Strong is released in the UK on 25th March.

Popstar, Model, Actress...Designer?

Britney Spears seemed to be happy and relaxed lately, as she visited designer Christian Audigier's office early this week.

Christian Audigier is the designer for many brands including Paco Chicano, SMET and Ed Hardy. Britney was there to sample his new Spring collection and take home a few freebies including Ed Hardy T-shirt and sunglasses seen in the picture.

Britney Spears has apparently also voiced interest in designing a line with Christian Audigier, and judging by her performance on How I Met Your Mother, she may have a lot of bottled up talent. This is a book you shouldn't necessarily judge by it's cover.

I don't know whether it's the counseling, or daddy's tough love that's putting a smile on her face, but whatever it is, i hope it's long term.

Britney Still hates her kids

I hate bagging on Britney, i really do, but she just keeps adding fuel to the fire, and makes it hard for anyone to ignore what she does.

The custody battle between Spears and Federline is at it's peak at the moment, with Kevin tarnishing Brits name as a fit mother. In order to prove herself, the court appointed the pop princess a few days to show them just how great of a mother she can be to Sean and Jayden.

Most people would think of this as a superb opportunity but when your Britney, chandeliers are worth more than children. In the few precious days that she could have spent time with her children, Britney decided that it was far more important to go shopping for chandeliers. She spent hours in the lighting store and kept her upset children in the car.

To make matters worse she asked the court appointed supervisor to supervise the kids while she shopped. The supervisor can make or break your custody battle, and Britney has most defintely damaged all her chances of getting her babies back anytime soon.

Not that she cares, because in Britney's eyes as long as your wearing Chanel 4157Q sunglasses, carrying a Hermes Kelly bag and shopping, shopping, shopping...then life is sweet....apparently...

Tom Ford sunglasses are making a splash in celebrity la la land. From the unfit head-shaving mother, to the socialite, to the rehab addict and back up to the glamorous women of Hollywood, everyone's in L.O.V.E with Tom Ford Sunglasses.

Tom Ford Margaux seems to be the most popular celeb choice with Cameron Diaz, Lindsay Lohan, Kate Beckinsale, Kate Hudson and Mischa Barton all being seen sporting a pair.

Although Tom Ford makes exceptional sunglasses, i absolutely hate the Tom Ford Anouk model that Nicole Richie and Kimberly Stewart have been seen in. The Tom Ford Anouk model was seen on the gorgeous Tom Ford Ads but the style doesn't really translate well in reality.

My Fav pairs would have to be the Tom Ford Camilla as seen on Monica Cruz (penelope Cruz' pretty little sister), and the Tom Ford Hawkings as seen on Lindsay Lohan, Ashley Olsen and Heidi Klum, they're too cool for school...

I think Britney's recent contact with her mum Lynn Spears is having a good effect on her.

Britney headed out for a day of shopping looking surprisingly covered up, wearing a beautiful navy blue satin top, aviator shades and flare jeans...

Hope Brit Brit is turning her life around...we want original Britney back!!!

Although Britney Spears is dressed like an absolute hillbilly on her way to Starbucks yesterday, i can't help but be glad for her. I think her body is looking fab, her shades look cool, she seems to actually be smiling genuinely and no ratty hair seems to be in sight! Baby steps for Britney...baby steps!

And congratulations to her for being the artist with the number 1 download of itunes in 12 different countries for her comeback hit Gimme More!!!

Britney Spears and Allie Sims matching bags...not so cute

Britney Spears obviously got her fashion inspiration from Angelina and Zahara this week when she was spotted two days in a row shopping and nightclub hopping with her current best friend/cousin/fake cousin Allie Sims, with matching handbags.

Both Britney and Allie were seen around toting the current season white Versace 'Quilted Snap out of it' bag. A designer bag is a fashion statement as it is, but matching at adulthood is...well...kinda tacky, attention seeking and looks like it was strategically planned.

This ain't no coincidence and poor Versace should just stop further productions of this bag, because being seen on Britney and Co just killed it's lust-factor...but IF you still love it, you can purchase this bag on eLuxury for $1900.

Bid on Britney's Fried Chicken Versace Gown

During an the OK magazine photo shoot, Britney Spears had a severe breakdown a couple of months back in which a ton of clothing and accessories went missing. On this particular day Britney also smeared fried chicken over a brand new Spring 2007 Versace Gown.

As bazaar as it sounds, this chicken stained dress is being Auctioned on Ebay by Ok magazine as we speak.

All proceeds go towards the charity Mothers Against Drink Driving, so if your a Britney fan, fried chicken fan or a want to help towards a worthy cause you can bid on the dress which started at US $1500.
