I have been slightly preoccupied with weddings..it is probably the season, but it may be all coupled with all of the tv shows that have had weddings in them lately as well. Grey's and Private Practice both had weddings on them just this week alone. Not to mention Gossip Girl keeps talking about engagements etc. Plus I swear every other day one of my friends is getting engaged or married!

Anyway, I LOVE lace wedding dresses. Here are some of the ones I have been loving online. I actually have had one picked out for like three years. I found it in a magazine forever ago and I want to have it made if I ever get married. Haha. I don't want to post a picture because I sort of want it to be a little bit of a surprise, but I know that it's going to be lace! It's still fun to look at others though, so here are some that I love bits and pieces of.

I kind of like more subtle lace, but I love the body and the buttons.

My day in the OR

So today I went and watched my uncle preform a couple surgeries, so that I could see how I liked it and if it is something that I really want to do, etc. Ummm I loved it. I thought it was so cool. Of course I'm obsessed with Grey's Anatomy and grew up watching ER with my mom, but I figured it would probably be a little different when the blood was oozing in front of my face and there was actually a body open in front of me on a table. It's not really all doctors falling in love and drama, however that's not necessarily everything I love about the shows. I did learn however, there are some similarities :) So here are some things that I learned today which in the operating room:

1. Doctors are slightly ruthless with the human body. Yes, they use precision when cutting or using their instruments, but today I watch them cut a woman's abdomen open and in order to move her stomach muscles apart they literally were pulling at them from each side like they were ripping open a christmas present. I was a little shocked. Wonder how long it takes that to heal.

2. Some women have the weirdest va-jay-jays. And some women do NOT groom. (my uncle is an obstetrician. I probably should have mentioned that.)

3. I am slightly proud of myself. First time in an operating room and I was not the least bit queasy. I think I may have found the correct profession. Cross your fingers that I actually get into school.

4. If your doctor pulls a mass the size of a cantaloup out your body, you probably waited to long to go see a doctor.

5. If you are already 40, have a mass the size of a cantaloup on your uterus, a giant cyst on your ovary, and endometriosis sites inside of your uterus you probably won't be able to have children. That woman has a lot of faith.

6. Doctors actually have the funniest conversations during surgery. They make jokes, they talk about their life, and sometimes they're even inappropriate...maybe Grey's Anatomy isn't that far off sometimes.

7. I love watching people come out of anesthesia. Need a laugh?

8. I really hope I don't have to get surgery anytime soon because, the patient just looks so helpless and vulnerable sitting there on the table right after you are put out. It would be hard to just trust that when you wake up everything is going to be ok. Plus, you're just laying there naked...so awkward. As a spectator, it honestly wasn't that weird, but I'm glad I wasn't the patient.

9. Surgery tools still look freaking primitive to me. Minus all the computer stuff and lapriscopes etc, the regular stuff just looks like it was made in the middle ages. Some of it is a little creepy.

10. Surprisingly, when they first cut into someone there is not that much blood. However, when you accidentally cut into a cyst, there is a lot of goo. I don't recommend it.

my weekend so far...

My weekend has been pretty boring. Between one too many episodes of SVU, continuous snow or rain, and basically being home alone, I was feeling slightly depressed...so I headed to the mall. Where I also started to feel a little depressed because it was filled with fun things to wear from spring, but when I looked outside it looked like January. Despite this, I decided to charge these little beauties to my Nordstrom card. Gotta love that. I won't next month :( That made me feel a little better. My go to on a bad day is shoes. Hopefully I can wear them soon. Anyway, do you like?

Yesterday I watched the movie Hereafter. It was actually really sad, but I liked it. I think if Matt Damon is in anything I would go see it. Not because I think he is hot (although he is attractive enough), but I think he is a good actor and I usually like the movies he is in.

I do way too much of this. I should probably cut it out. I need to get a life again. Maybe once summer gets here I will.

Kourtney and Kim

I'm not gonna lie...I'm kind of sad that Kourtney and Kim Take New York is over.

It's my weekly humor. They seriously just crack me up.

The season finale was kind of lame though.

1. It left us hanging with Kim...is she dating that guy? Is she not? And it's not like she's getting a show about staying in New York so it just leaves you wondering what's gonna happen with her.

2. Ummm I felt so bad for Scott. He's been so much nicer this season and trying so hard and then Kourtney goes and screws up his whole surprise proposal. Really? You date someone for that long and have a kid and go through everything they have gone through and you don't want to get married? It's like he said...he wonders if she views it as a temporary thing. I would too. If I put that much into a relationship and she tells him there's nothing to expect in the end...? Why would there be any point in staying in the relationship still. He said he'd always planned on getting married and etc. It was just sad because he was sooo excited and it was so cute.

3. Overall it wasn't as funny as all of their other episodes...so that was a letdown because that's why I watch it.

Also, I really just don't think I'm going to want to watch Khloe and Lamar...she is sort of annoying. She's funny when she's with Kourtney, but she's whiney with Lamar. I'll stick with the other Kardashian shows for my airhead humor. :)

i have a problem

I'm pretty sure I just spend the last week watching every possible crime show there is. I probably watched more hours of them that I worked.

For example I just watched a two hour special on the 15 most notorious women. In the top three was the woman who "Monster" was about, Aileen Wuornos. She was one of the first woman serial killers...not many of those. She was a prostitute, who used this "ability" to kill the men who were going to use her services. Anyway, it's kind of interesting. She was sentenced to the death penalty. And she wasn't even number one on the list. Neither was the mother who let her car drive into a lake with her two kids strapped in their carseats in that back. Or the girl who secretly carried her pregnancy to term, had the baby DURING prom, and then dumped it in a trash can and went out and enjoyed the rest of prom. What?

Then I proceeded to watch ANOTHER special on "Dating Nightmares". This one was about girls meeting pyschos online who they think are like 19, but really they are a creepy 43 year old rapist, or a boyfriend who turns out to be a stalker and burns the new boyfriend's house down and then shoots the girl in the head...etc you get it. And I thought I had dating nightmares. The people I date just dump me. Ok I admit, I have some stories. Maybe I'll tell you about them sometime.

Anyway, the previous days this week I probably watched a good 40 to 50 episodes of Law and Order, CSI, Castle, and Criminal Minds. I'm just addicted...not to mention starting to have creepy dreams.

What can I say? I love them. O, and I don't think I'll ever date anyone online...ever.

I was bored, driving down to Jake's the other day because my ipod died and the radio stations don't work so well on the way to Holden...anway, I started thinking of a list of all my favorite things right now. TV to talk about

So...some rambling thoughts on tv...yeah tv

First of all, the girls at work were laughing at me the other day because I was watching Million Dollar Money Drop on Hulu, because none of the new tv shows had started again and it was UNBELIEVABLY slow at work. (one of the reasons I decided to start a blog...after I've done all my work of course haha). Anyway, back to my point...I was getting so nervous for these poor people who keep watching their money drop all the way down the shoots. I kept shouting at the computer screen and yelling, "you idiot! that's a stupid answer. you're going to lose all your money". So the next day I played it out loud and of course April was getting nervous right along with me.

Then finally, my guiltiest of all pleasures started again! THE BACHELOR! (not the bachelorette...because I think the crazy fighting girls are so much funnier...and yes I admit, I've always wanted to go on it...but the more I watch...the stupider they look and if I were to make it I'd probably hit someone and get kicked off.) ANYWAY...once again I found myself sitting there talking to myself. So I'd probably fit right in with the crazy girls on tv.
Then I was thinking...guys are WAY worse. Hello, Jake during a Giants game? I'm lucky to not end up with a remote at my head (on accident...he's not listening or looking at anything else when those games are on)...or a broken ear drum at the end of the game. I guess I have to say we're even because if they want to jump around and scream during a sports game then they have to deal with women and they're trashy/sappy tv. However I will say this, I watch A LOT of sports and I have yet to get a certain someone to watch an episode of Grey's Anatomy...which by the way started last night and got me thinking about this tv post! I'm so happy Kristina and Meredith are friends again. I loved last night's episode!

I cannot wait for Gossip Girl! 2 and a 1/2 more weeks? REALLY? ugh! Hurry up PLEASE! Until then...

Fashioning February: Kell on Earth - Review

Watching The Hills and The City over those years gave me an insight into what PR maverick, Kelly Cutrone did for a living but it never really showed how she did it and why. Ms Cutrone reps for 46 fashion brands and is responsible for producing back to back shows every season for her clients at New York and London Fashion Weeks. Every February and September is crazy as hell for Kelly and her team at People's Revolution what with recruiting models for shows, putting together seating charts and sending out invites to shows and after parties. Dressed head to toe in black (what else?) Ms Cutrone resembles a raven who would devour you relentlessly if you ever tried to hurt her loved ones. In the anticipation for the launch of the show I was expecting a reality show which focussed totally on Kelly�s very snarky personality; you know those shows which feature the protagonist reflecting in their deep thoughts. Instead we have a very entertaining programme which reflects the buzzy, ever so manic but exhilarating nature of the fashion business. We also get to see another side of Kelly as mother to seven year old Ava who is as cute as a button. The scenes between the two are quite endearing but what impressed me about Kelly was her attitude to motherhood. Her business and home is based in her four level block in Manhattan and she created this haven so her world can centre around her daughter. This kicks ass to the myth that women cannot succeed in business and bring up babies at the same time or that they have to sacrifice one for the other.

In Kell on Earth we meet the real players of People�s Revolution ie the ones who did the real work while Whitney and Roxy waltzed around all day gossiping about their trivial problems. There is Robyn Berkely who is Kelly�s right hand and a partner at the company. She lives and breathes fashion so much that she forgot to find somewhere to live when the lease for her apartment expired and now inhabits a room one of the floors in the People�s Revolution building. Like Kelly, Robyn has very high demands and will not tolerate mistakes. The pert, Emily Bungert is also a partner at the firm and is a feisty madam from the Midwest who tells it like it is. Stefanie Skinner, is Kelly�s former PA who has just been promoted to junior executive and is struggling to stay above water to meet the demands of her bosses. She is a tough cookie though and is not frightened to fight her corner even against the mighty Kelly. Then there is Andrew Mukamal, Kelly�s new PA and the only male in a room full of strong and opinionated women. His love of fashion and goth like dress style makes him a big hit with all members of staff who he can be seen lending a listening ear to.

I find it very interesting watching Kelly at work because then I think of Rachel Zoe and how very different they both are. Rachel is very girly girly and Kelly is not, Rachel is also quite touchy feely with her staff and something tells me that Kelly would collapse into a big heap of black lycra if anyone tried to hug her. However what the two women have in common is their passion for fashion, obsessive eye for details and demands for perfection. In a nutshell, the reality show was surprisingly good; pacey enough so you can get caught up in the drama but not too over melodramatic that you lose touch with it. While shows like The Hills and The City have presented a fairytale look at working in fashion, Kell on Earth knocks that tooth right on the head. Kelly�s book, If You Have to Cry, Go Outside: And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You was released this week much to her dismay which she described as hell on earth. The book is aimed at women who choose not to have the conventional lifestyle ie getting a degree, getting a great job, getting married and having a baby and yes in that exact order. It acts as an empowerment tool for women who are just a little bit different. 

Kell on Earth airs on Mondays on Bravo TV at 10.00pm.

Material Girl: Review

I can't remember the last time I sat down and watched a proper British drama series that made me feel so inspired and excited that I could not wait to see the next episode. Oh I lie, I do remember it was This Life and the year was 1996; I had finished my BA and was at journalism college and the debutante professional lives of five every so crazy lawyers who shared a house in South London had me gripped. With vivid sex scenes and colourful language and explosive storylines, This Life was Sex and the City before the iconic show became Sex and the City. Then there was the wonderful Cold Feet which charmed the us with the lives of three couples based in Manchester. Well since This Life sadly disappeared from our screens in 1997 and Cold Feet in 2003,  I have migrated to US TV shows like Lipstick Jungle, Gossip Girl, 90210, Melrose Place and the Canadian import, Being Erica. Aside from soaps like Eastenders, Brit TVvery rarely got a look in. During the noughties Sarah Parish ruled the Brit drama roost with roles in Hearts and Bones, Cutting It, Honest and Mistresses. I never really took to Cutting It, Mistresses was ok but I never warmed to any of the female characters and I totally missed out on Hearts and Bones. This is why the arrival of Material Girl (read my preview post) has been hugely anticipated by me and fellow fashionistas.

Material Girl (based on the book, Fashion Babylon by Imogen Edwards Jones) is the story of Ali Radcliffe played by Lenora Crichlow, an aspiring designer who decides to set up her own label after being treated badly by her boss who is the very successful but neurotic Davinia Taylor played by Dervla Kirwan. She goes into partnership with Marco Keriliak played my Michael Landes who studied at St Martins with Davinia and is keen to even a score with his nemesis. The series is set in the busy hub of London's East End and we are introduced to Ali's colourful set of friends which consists of Alex, a fellow designer who works for Ali's rival, Mimi who works at a glossy magazine and Lydia who is one of the country's top models. We see Ali go head to head with the spiteful Davinia who will stop at nothing to jeapordise Ali's career. The show starts off spendidly with shots of Champs-Elysees where Ali is helping Davinia prepare for her show at Paris Fashion Week. The rapid shots really evoke the pace and excitement of the fashion industry particularly when Fashion Week is on.  Like other glam shows such as Ugly Betty and Sex and the City, Material Girl could be enjoyed purely on the scenery which is totally vibrant and rather eclectic. The outfits have taken quite a bit of a panning by fashion journalists but considering that we see Ali dressed in play suits, capes, vintage shift dresses and of course elegant stilettos which are all key looks for any decent fashion lover I beg to differ. But hey what do I know? I only follow fashion right. Yes, Material Girl may be full of cliches albeit bitchy boss, the must have gay BF, the wacky and out there pal and the trusted bestie but it is a really good show and very enjoyable. We need more Brit dramas like this please, in fact we need more Brit dramas period.

Material Girl airs on Thursdays at 8pm on BBC One

Kell on Earth

Those of you watch The Hills and The City will know that Kelly Cutrone does not joke. The PR Guru takes no prisoners and does not mince words when she has something to say. She is no doubt one of the most entertaining and enigmatic characters in the two hit reality shows. Lauren Conrad who The Hills was based on and Whitney Port who is the star of The City just pale in comparison to Kelly. So it was of no surprise last year when I heard that good old Kelly is getting her own reality TV show. Aptly titled Kell on Earth, the programme will focus on her company, People's Revolution which reps fashion designers and stylists such as Jeremy Scott, Paco Rabanne, Vivienne Westwood, Sass & Bide and the legendary Patricia Fields.

Kell on Earth airs on 1st February on Bravo TV and I cannot wait to see it.  With a book due out in the same week it looks like Kelly will be a very busy lady.

The Beautiful Life Returns

Remember when models ruled the world in the 90s with Naomi, Linda, Christy and Cindy? Yep who can forget when that gorgeous quartet rocked the runway at the Versace show to George Michael's Freedom. That was a moment etched in pop culture history with fashion meshing with music. During that decade everyone became obessed with models and not a magazine went by without a model appearing on the cover. The term supermodel was born and granted to a select few and they became very famous and rich. Following the media and public's appetite for tall and skinny creatures a show was created that showed the fabulous life of a model. Enter Models Inc which was launched in 1994 and starred Linda Gray from Dallas and Carrie-Ann Moss who go on and kick ass in The Matrix. The show was not a huge  success and ran for one season.

The Beautiful Life  is the baby of Ashton Kutcher (he is the executive producer)  and it made it's debut this season on CWTV with Mischa Barton as top billing. However the show was axed after only two episodes and I was devastated as I was really getting into it. It seemed that although we love shows about models in reality shows such as America's Next Top Model, fiction shows about them are not as well received. Today I  logged onto Perez Hilton and found out that The Beautiful Life is being relaunched by Ashton Kutcher on YouTube. That's right, all five episodes will be available to watch online. The objective is to prove that an online show can get more viewers than one that is aired on TV. If the shows turn out to be a hit then this will give Ashton the green light to make more episodes specifically for the web. How exciting! I love to seeing people taking life by the hands and really going for things they believe in.

Let me give you a bit of background on The Beautiful Life aka TBL. Forget Mischa, TBL is actually about Chris Mathews played by Benjamin Hollingsworth, a small town boy from Iowa who falls into modelling as a way to make some extra cash for his struggling family. He moves into a model house in Manhattan where he meets Raina Mayer played by Sara Paxton, an up and coming model who I guess is like a new Christy Turlington. How can I describe Raina? Well she is gorgeous, kind, gutsy and humble; kind of like Mother Theresa in stilettos. The two teenagers are instantly attracted to each other but as you would have it work keeps getting in the way. There is also a small matter of a huge family secret that Raina is carrying. Other characters are Sonja Stone played by Mischa Barton who is making a comeback to modelling after an unexplained six month hiatus. Marissa Delfina played by Ashley Madekwe, a Brit chick who will stop at nothing to get to the top and that includes knocking Sonja off her perche. Cole Shephard played by Nico Tortorella is a seasoned model who holds a torch for Raina. Issac Taylor played by Corbin Bleu plans to replace modelling with a career in music but finds himself in a dangerous relationship with cougar, Vivienne played by Jaime Murray who is interested in more than his modelling abililites. Then there is former supermodel, Claudia Foster played by Elle McPherson who owns the modelling agency they work for and determined to make it a success no matter what. The Beautiful Life is a rather voyeristic look into the crazy and ultra competitive life of the modeling world.
