Fashioning Februray: Evolving Influence - A Q&A with Founder Jennine Jacob

You know an activity is here to stay when suddenly there are loads of events about it springing up all over the place. Over the last couple of years we have seen the emergence of blogging conferences such as BlogHer. Blogging While Brown and Blog World Expo. This Thursday Evolving Influence - a fashion blogging conference kicks off in New York covering topics such as the business of blogging, working with brands and the issues surrounding blog content. The event is in its third season and is now hosted by New York Fashion Week. I remember watching the first ever Evolving Influence this time last year and it was all everyone was talking about (well fashion bloggers anyway); the event was an instant hit and was totally over subscribed. So it is really inspiring to see it go from a one day independent blogging event to a two day one that is supported by one of the biggest fashion weeks in the word. Evolving Influence was set up by Jennine Jacob as a way of bringing the blogging community together and share best practice. An avid fashion blogger, Jennine is also the founder of Independent Fashion Bloggers (IFB) which is a portal that creates a community for fashion bloggers to share anything from their experiences to technical advice. The lovely Jennine took time to answer a few questions which I was so grateful for as she is a pretty busy lady.

What made you decide to set up Evolving Influence?
IFB started doing events at New York Fashion Week and London Fashion Week in February of 2009 called Dress Up. While it was a lot of fun to meet everyone, there was something missing, Dress Up didn't have the educational component that made IFB what it is. So we had an idea to do a few panels before Dress Up and the first time, we filled the venue, there was a line around the block and people were so excited to be there. The energy was infectiously delightful, as we bloggers made it clear we're hungry to learn. It was then it became clear that two hours weren't enough to talk about everything., so I expanded it to a day.

What criterias do you use in choosing the speakers?

That's a very good question. At first I wanted to get the top of the top bloggers in the industry, and that's been really great, but at the same time bloggers are really tired of hearing about the same five people. This time I've tried to get a good mix of the up and coming and the established. Finding people who have something to say, who have energy and savvy. It's a bit difficult, because some of the most famous bloggers do well on screen but in real life, they're shy, while some of the more dynamic people in real life don't have as established a blog. Even then, it's finding the dynamic people who really want to share their experience. It's a challenge to find the right combination. Strangely enough, I get very wary about people who volunteer to speak. Not really sure what that is about, if it's a personal preference or not.  But I prefer to let the community do the talking for the potential speakers.

What should we expect from Evolving Influence February 2011 and are there any plans to bring it abroad like say London?

We are honored  Milk Studios has invited us to host our conference right there. It's the first time a major Fashion Week venue has invited bloggers in, this is a huge step towards legitimization of the fashion blogging industry. We're not only hoping to get in to see the shows, we're part of the show, and that's huge. There are some exciting people on the panel. It is a great mix of bloggers and people from the established industry, and a special pair designers. Stay tuned! My goal this year is to bring Evolving Influence to the UK. IFB gets more traffic from London than any other city (even New York) and I want to make sure our community has an opportunity to get together. I've been working on building contacts and getting everything together, so hopefully that goal becomes a reality.

Evolving Influence takes place in New York on Thursday 10th to Friday 11th February.

Be Coveted

We all know Jennine Tamm as that lovely lady who runs Independent Fashion Bloggers, the global social networking site for fashion bloggers. When she is not plugging away with IFB Jennine dons her other hat as editor of The Coveted. Described as a blog about style without compromise, The Coveted covers style, beauty, fashion culture, beauty trends, eco-beauty, vintage clothing and emerging designers. This delightful blog was launched in 2007 and it is regarded as one of the best fashion blogs around. The Coveted has been featured on Glamour, IQONs, Modepass, and Pronto. I decided it was time to catch up with Jennine and get the 411 on The Coveted.

What made you start blogging?

Oh, there really isn't a straight answer to this. I had been interested in blogs since about 2002 when I heard people were keeping 'diaries' online. I even tried starting an online diary, but my daily life really isn't that interesting. For about a year or two before I started my own blog I was going through a few things... One, I wanted to do something interesting with my life. I liked my job, but I didn't love it, and greedy me wanted a job I loved and felt fulfilled with. Two, I had developed a shopping addiction. Three, I loved reading blogs. I guess the combination of the three gave me a purpose, a subject and a passion so when The Coveted was born in 2007 I had the stamina to keep it going and to keep trying to improve it.

We know the concept behind The Coveted is about style, beauty, fashion, tell us about the team behind it and how you work. Well, last year, my best friend started posting with me about beauty. But her life got busy, so in November Sonja started posting. She's been really great, as she has a background in journalism, so she's done a great job of mixing the two disciplines. She posts about twice a week, and I post about twice a day about fashion related things, and inspiration points. I've actually never met Sonja in real life, but through working together these last 7 months, I feel like I have met her.

The Coveted is such a pretty blog, how did you come up with the look?

Thank you! Well, I was a graphic designer for 10 years, so I think some of my skills were used in the making of my blog identity. It really was an evolution really, from when The Coveted was on blogger, and I was figuring out the blog templates, and from there I kept tweaking. To tell the truth, I'm thinking of doing a site redesign, but I"m going to keep the logo, it took 2 years to come up with it. I mean, it took me that long to really feel good about my identity online, so the logo came out of reaching that point.

How do you think bloggers have made an impact on the media?

I'm not really sure yet. I can say from my own experience, that I fell in love with blogging because I loved the idea the author was so accessible. That when I got into a blog, it felt more personal than reading the newspaper, or flipping through a magazine. The blogger felt like a friend, that I could ask questions and would let me in on their own musings. Online media has really come a long way, and traditional media is beginning to operate with community in mind, but I don't know if they have really captured that personal touch that makes blogging so appealing.

What do you do when you are not working on your blog?

Watching movies, baking, riding my bike, reading, giggling over D-Listed and icanhascheeseburger.

Describe a typical day.

I wake up, take a shower, make coffee. By 10am I start to working, I get my posts finished by 12pm then I work on all the other things that revolve around my sites, usually that will go until 7pm and then I go for a walk with my husband, then we make dinner. I finish up my work, or dilly dally about online for a bit, then I watch some TV or read a book. It's all kind of boring really.

Name your top fashion icons.

I'm really loving Tilda Swindon these days, she just impresses me so much! Also Lara Stone, Bjork, Patti Smith, Catherine Denueve, Grace Jones, Marchesa Luisa Casati... wow, I have an eclectic mix here.

Name five blogs that you read religiously.

Other than the two in #5? Heh, well, let's see I read my RSS feed every day, and there's over 300 blogs in there, not all fashion of course... and I don't read them all every day, and they don't all post every day. Thank god. At one point I had something like 703 blogs in my reader, that makes me cry every time I remember that.

How do you see The Coveted evolving over the next two years?

You know, I'm not really sure about that. One thing I can say, is that it'll always be a work in progress.

Style Sample Magazine

The Satorialist revealed his much anticipated book on his blog and let me tell you the support he received from fellow bloggers was overwhelming. When the self named book is released in a few weeks I am sure it will gallop into the bestsellers list. The power of the blogger has grown immensely over the last few years with us gaining access to VIP events, being featured in glossy magazines while a few of us have even been taken on as consultants for hip brands. The growth in bloggers has created a community which inspires one another hence the Independent Fashion Bloggers aka IFB which is one of the largest blogger networks in the world. IFB was introduced by Jennine Tamm in 2007 and is a wonderful online forum for fashion bloggers to meet, exchange ideas and offer each other gain support.

Now that practice has been taken offline in the shape of Style Sample Magazine which is written by bloggers for bloggers. I stumbled across Style Sample a few weeks back when I was just browsing and was riveted by what I saw. The publication features articles about a wide variety of bloggers across the world. It was set up by Tamia Stimson earlier this year and already amassed an impressive following. I decided it was time to catch up with Tamia and find out what the deal was with Style Sample.

How did you come up with the name Style Sample?
I did an event a few years ago called Sample Designer Collective, and decided I wanted to stick with the Sample name. I also wanted my blog's initials--TSS--to be the same as my initials. Since the magazine was sort of a spin-off of the blog, I kept the name.


Is the magazine available in hard copy?
Yes, Style Sample Magazine is available online at MagCloud, an online print on demand service and you can order as many copies as you'd like. Currently, MagCloud only ships to the US, UK, and Canada, but they plan to offer shipping to other countries soon.

The digital format is an exciting one � what made you decide to use it?
The idea of digital publishing really appealed to me because I'm a bit of a geek and tend to spend a lot of time online. I became aware of the flash-based flip magazine format a few years ago and knew I wanted to take advantage of the technology some day--obviously the magazine presented the perfect opportunity to do so.

How many people are involved in the production of the magazine?
I believe there were 25 bloggers who contributed to the June/July issue. All of the content--from writing, to editing, to photography and illustrations--is produced by the wonderful bloggers who are featured as writers, editors, and subjects in the magazine. I do the design and layout, proofread all of the articles, find and edit additional content and images, and write whatever is still needed after the contributors do their part.

Reading the magazine I can see that you have featured an interesting range of bloggers; how do you decide which blogger to feature?
I look at a number of variables, the most important being quality content. Bloggers with a clearly defined personal style and sharp writing tend to be able to express themselves well in articles and interviews. Since fashion is aesthetically driven, the look and layout of a blog is also important as it helps draw readers in. I try to include a variety of styles and personalities and feature bloggers from diverse locations in each issue to mix things up, so hopefully there's something for everyone.

How long have you been blogging and what made you start?
I created a site called Coquette Style back in 2004 or so, before I even knew what blogging was. I posted pictures of my outfits, inspiration...pretty much the same things I post about today, now that I think about it. That lasted about two months because updating was really tedious. I started TheStyleSample.com in November of 2008 because I missed having that creative outlet and wanted to get back in the game, so to speak.

What is your day job?
I work in marketing for a biopharmaceutical company.

Describe a day in the life of Tamia Stinson.
I get up and go to work. I spend way too much time picking out clothes, but I usually head out the door around 7:45am and walk to the office--it's only a few blocks and I hate driving. During the course of the day I try to engage in social media via Twitter and various blogs I follow, check and respond to my email regularly, and keep up with the latest tech news--I'm a bit of a geek in that respect. After work, I head to the gym to work out or straight home if I have a lot of work to do. I try to knock out a blog post or two, take some pictures with my boyfriend (he's my main photographer and is very patient, thank God!), work on the magazine, do some social networking on Facebook, Chictopia, TheFashionSpot or one of the many other sites I frequent, or catch up on my list of "read later" items. If I'm in the mood to cook I'll make dinner, and if not I'll go out and grab a bite or get something when I'm out at a meeting or event--I usually have something I have to attend at least once a week. I make my to-do list for the next day, take care of my cat, hop in the shower, and get in bed with a magazine for stylish dreams...

I subscribe to Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Fashion Mini, and Lucky right now. I love treating myself to overseas mags like Russh Australia, L'Officiel Paris, ViVi (Japanese mag), and Jalouse when I can afford it.

Love Me, Love My Blog

When you approach a bank for a loan to set up your business one of the questions you are asked is whether you have the support of your partner. I used to think that question was irrelevant after all it is you running the business not your partner right? Well actually wrong; the support of your partner when setting up a venture is crucial and to an extent invaluable. For it is their words of support and encouragement that will get you through the hard times and the same goes for your blog. Me, My Blog and I

A couple of months ago I was feeling down and a sent a text to a mate and she replied saying "You have a fabulous life; you go to great fashion shows and you have a great blog." I was like huh? Blogging is just a thing. Then I thought deep and hard; my blog may not be life and death but it is a lot of fun and makes me happy. I wonder how many other bloggers feel the same or maybe blogging is just something to do when they are bored.
